Lumos Institute — Radiography education and workforce development.

Learn from someone who has done the job — not just taught it.

The Lumos Institute develops people and capability across radiography and diagnostic imaging — from individual practitioners building their careers, to the services that employ and develop them. Everything we deliver is grounded in real clinical and operational experience, because that is the only place good healthcare education comes from.

What the Institute is for

Radiography is changing faster than the training around it. Workforce shortages, international recruitment, expanding scopes of practice, new technologies, and services under constant operational pressure — the work has moved on, and a lot of education has not moved with it. The Lumos Institute exists to close that gap.

We develop education and professional development for:

  • Individual radiographers — including overseas-qualified practitioners moving into UK practice, and UK radiographers progressing through their careers.
  • The diagnostic imaging support workforce — healthcare assistants and assistant practitioners developing the skills and knowledge to grow into and within imaging roles.
  • Services and organisations — NHS trusts, independent providers, and international healthcare organisations developing their people and their pathways.

Everything we deliver is designed by someone who has worked at the radiographer level, managed the services, and hired the people. That is the whole idea: education shaped by the service, for the service.

Who teaches here

Every Lumos Institute course is designed and taught by someone who has actually done the work — not a professional trainer reading from a deck. Our teaching draws directly on active clinical and operational practice in UK radiology and diagnostic imaging.

Every programme is led by practitioners who are currently working in the services they teach about — bringing the clinical judgement, operational realism, and honest perspective that only come from being in the work day to day.

Working with organisations

Supporting services on development challenges that do not fit a standard catalogue.

Alongside open courses for individuals, the Institute works directly with services on capability building, workforce integration, and leadership development. That includes structured onboarding for overseas radiographers entering UK practice, development pathways for the imaging support workforce, and capability building for teams adapting to new pathways, technologies, or ways of working.

Every engagement starts with a conversation about what your service is actually trying to achieve.

Questions

Common questions

Are the courses accredited?

We are actively pursuing CPD accreditation with the Society and College of Radiographers. Certificates of completion are provided for all courses in the interim.

Can my employer pay for the course?

Yes, and we would encourage it. We can issue invoices to employers directly and provide everything needed for CPD evidence. If your manager wants to sponsor your place, ask them to email us and we will handle it from there.

Do you work with organisations outside the UK?

Yes. Open courses are designed to be accessible to participants based anywhere. For organisational programmes, we work with international healthcare providers and adapt language, frameworks, and context accordingly.

Can you run a course just for my team?

Yes. Both current courses can be delivered as closed cohorts for a single service. We can also scope something tailored — get in touch and we will work through it with you.

Are more courses coming?

Yes. The current two programmes are the start of a wider curriculum covering UK practice orientation, HCA-to-assistant practitioner development, and operational and leadership development for imaging services. If you would like to know when new programmes open, drop us a note.
